Winter bike track days in Spain and Portugal
Swap a wet British winter for Almería, Jerez or Portimão. How the trips work, what they cost, and how the main UK bike organisers compare.
From November to March most UK circuits are closed, cold or soaking. Meanwhile it's often 18 to 22 degrees and dry in southern Spain and the Algarve. That's why a few thousand British riders fly out every winter for three or four days on circuits like Almería, Andalucía, Jerez, Valencia and Portimão. It's also the best way to keep your eye in over the winter and arrive at your first UK day of the year already up to speed.
How the trips work
Most UK organisers sell a package. You fly yourself out, and they look after the rest:
- Bike transport. Drop your bike at a collection point in the UK (or have it picked up from home for a fee) and it's waiting in the garage at the circuit. Most organisers will also arrange tyres and fuel.
- Track time over two to five days, in groups by pace, usually with free instruction.
- Hotel nights, often included in the price on the longer trips.
- Bike hire if you'd rather not send your own.
Check exactly what's included before you compare prices. Some quote track time only, others include hotels and transport.

Which circuit first?
Almería and Andalucía are next door to each other in the desert near Tabernas. They're the driest bet in winter and the most popular first trip. Portimão is the rollercoaster everyone wants to ride, with blind crests and big elevation changes. Jerez and Valencia are proper MotoGP tracks with the history to match.
What else to budget for
- Flights: Almería, Málaga, Seville and Faro are the usual airports.
- Bike transport, if it isn't included.
- Tyres: hot, abrasive Spanish tarmac can finish a set in a couple of days.
- Insurance: track day cover that includes European circuits, plus travel insurance that covers motorcycling on track, which many standard policies don't.
- A hire car or the organiser's shuttle between hotel and circuit.
