Blyton Park
Small, friendly Lincolnshire airfield circuit with daft corner names, a grippy surface and plenty of run-off, ideal for a first track day or learning car control.

Blyton Park sits on the old RAF Blyton airfield, about five miles north-east of Gainsborough. Bomber crews trained here during the war, and the site has hosted grass-track and other motorsport for decades, but the tarmac circuit as it is now went live in May 2011 after an eight-year project led by Richard Usher. The layout was drawn up by former touring car driver Eugene O'Brian and evo's John Barker, which tells you it was designed by people who like driving.
The Outer Circuit, at about 1.6 miles, is the one most days use. It's mostly flat, the surface is grippy and there's generous run-off, so it's a cracking place for a first track day or a low-powered car. Don't mistake it for easy, though. Bunga Bunga and Port Froid will show up untidy driving straight away. Car days run through partners like Javelin, and the British Superbike School runs bike days.
A lap of Blyton Park
Layout: Outer Circuit, 2.575 km (1.60 miles)
We'll pick the lap up at Jochen. Come in from as far right as you can and turn in late. You give a bit of speed away here, but it sets you up for the next section, and that's where the time is. The Ump follows: clip the left apex, then ease across to the right-hand kerb with the power building the whole way through.
Lancaster is flat in most cars. Stay on the throttle and let the car drift gently to the right rather than holding it tight, which only scrubs speed. Then it's hard on the brakes for The Wiggler. Approach from the right, turn in early and use the inside kerb. Whatever you do, don't cut the left-hand exit. It's loose and has a big dip in it.
Bishops wants the right wheels near the white line, a clip of the left apex and then steering unwound as the power goes on. Let it run wide. Bunga Bunga is the toughest corner on the lap. Treat it as a double apex, stay wide, turn in late and let the car drift right on exit. A quick change into fourth follows as you move left for Port Froid, a fast run of sweeping bends where any sudden steering upsets the car.
Ushers is a late, hard stop. Turn in gently, use all the width and carry speed in, accepting a slower exit. About two-thirds of the way round, a small dip will kick the car left, so be ready for it. The pit entry lane is on the right here. Finally Twickers: start right, turn in late, hit the apex and let the car drift onto the exit kerb, which is grippy once you trust it. That brings you back round to Jochen.
Track day tips
- Bunga Bunga is the corner that makes or breaks a lap. Spend a session getting that one right before you worry about anything else.
- Don't cut the exit of The Wiggler. The edge is loose and dipped and it'll throw stones and upset the car.
- Noise on listed track days is 95dB drive-by, so it's more relaxed than Bedford or Goodwood, but check the limit for your organiser.
- It's a short lap, so traffic builds up fast. Use the mirrors and give faster cars a clear point-by on the straights.
- The site is open and flat, so wind and rain sweep across it. Bring a waterproof and something warm for the paddock.
- Gainsborough is the nearest town for fuel and food, a few minutes' drive back down the A159.

Getting there
Blyton Park is at the Old Blyton Airfield on Kirton Road, Blyton, DN21 3PE. It's off the A159 between Gainsborough and Scunthorpe, so most people come in from the A1 via Gainsborough or from the M180 via Scunthorpe. The nearest railway station is Gainsborough Central, about 15 minutes by taxi. Gainsborough has a few hotels and pubs, and Lincoln is a short drive away if you want more choice. It's a rural spot, so leave a bit of extra time on the lanes.
